Sifnos is a medium-sized island in the western Cyclades. It is located between Serifos and Kimolos. It is about 130 kilometers or 80 nautical miles from Piraeus.
It has an area of 73,942 square kilometers, a length of 15 kilometers and a width of 7.5 kilometers. Its coastline is about 70 km long, and has a permanent population of 2,625 inhabitants. Sifnos has a long tradition in pottery and cooking, as it is the birthplace of Nikos Tselemente, the leading Greek chef of the 20th century. The villages of Sifnos are: Apollonia which is also the capital since 1836 and was named after the god Apollo, Ano Petali, Exabela, Kato Petali, Katavati, Artemonas which is the largest village and was named after the goddess Artemi and the Castle. Here is an archeological museum in the Castle and the old Primary School is at its entrance. Important art exhibitions are also organized there during the summer months. The coastal settlements of the island are Kamares which is the port, Vathi, Faros, Herronisos, Platis Gialos, and Fasolou. The most important beaches are located in Glyfos, Fasolou, Faro, Seralia (the beach of Kastro and the ancient port of Sifnos), Apokofto, Vroulidia,
Herronisos (or Hersonissos), Platis Gialos, Kamares and Vathi.
